James Welkin (born 1798) was one of the first children to be born in Dodson. He was a successful farmer, inheriting his farm from his father, Charles Welkin, one of the original settlers of Dodson. Welkin was known for his strong opinions and willingness to fight for his beliefs and his family. After Charles was the first victim of The Dodson Murderer, Welkin led the initial search for the murderer until the first trial and execution of Tom Daniels. Welkin was killed a week after the execution by the true murderer.
